I am a senior at the University of Oklahoma. My friend and I have the same advisor. Our second to last semester we went into to our last advising appointment. It was so exciting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As fate would have it, a light is not what was seen for my friend. Our advisor told her some of her credits from her previous college had not transfer. She was still missing 35 credit hours!
At the University of Oklahoma graduate students are allowed to advise undergraduate students. I have so many thing to say on that subject alone but instead I am going to tell you what I wish I would have known, and done, when I started at a University.
If you transferred, get a second opinion! Lucky, I did this my first semester at OU. Once I talked to my advisor, I went to the department advisor. One thing that I have learned, there is ALWAYS someone higher up.
Secondly, I wish I would have known about intercession classes. Most universities offer online classes during academic break. OU offers a Winter and Spring intercession. I would not have been able to graduate on time if I would not have taken advantage of these.
I also wish I knew that it is possible to test out of math and Spanish. It might be possible to test out of other subjects but these two I know you can.
As you continue your career, do not trust your advisor. I know that is a strong statement but checking for yourself can only help you in the long run. I kept my degree check sheet with me when I enrolled to make sure that everything I enrolled in put me closer to graduating. Many universities also offer a degree check online.
I wish you the best of luck. When you feel like giving up, drink coffee and try again.
