Why Staying Busy Is Not Always a Good Thing

In today's world we like to stay busy. We like to go to football games every weekend, work, go to classes (maybe we don't like those last two), go to parties, being a part of clubs on campus, having lunch with friends, etc. But I would argue that staying busy all the time can be a huge distraction in our relationship with God. Sometimes we allow ourselves to get so busy that we are no longer focusing on the important things. Other times we are so tired from being busy that we don't have the energy to fight the temptations the Devil throws at us.

Jesus spent a lot of time alone. Just before he was crucified he went into the garden to pray alone. Luke 22:43 says "an angel from heaven gave Him strength." I think that if I were about to go through something as dramatic as being crucified I would try to stay busy and keep my mind off of it, but that's not what Jesus did. Jesus knew that if He didn't take the time to get strength from His father, that He might not be strong enough to go through with it.

Luke 5:15-16 says "The news about Jesus spread even more. Large crowds gathered to hear him and have their diseases cured. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray." I like the fact that this passage uses the word "lonely" I think that one reason we keep ourselves so busy is the fear of being lonely but Jesus sought it out as opposed to avoiding it. He knew that the only thing that can truly defeat the feeling of loneliness is the communion with God.

If Jesus took the time to be alone and seek out God's strength in his life how much more do we need to?
